Mario Kart Wii is a 2008 racing game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development for the Wii, and the sixth main entry in the Mario Kart series. Players choose from a roster of Mario franchise characters and compete across themed circuits, using item pickups to hinder opponents and gain positional advantages with the goal of finishing first. The game expands the field from eight to twelve racers per race and introduces motorcycles alongside the series' traditional karts as selectable vehicle types. A notable feature is its use of the Wii's motion controls; most copies of the game included a Wii Wheel peripheral, though conventional controllers remain compatible. Standard game modes include Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus, and Battle. The title places considerable emphasis on multiplayer, supporting both local and competitive play across its various modes.
