Ninja Gaiden 3 is a hack-and-slash action game developed by Team NINJA, released in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The third mainline entry in the modern Ninja Gaiden series, it holds the distinction of being the first not directed by former Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki. Players control ninja Ryu Hayabusa through combat-heavy gameplay that introduces revised mechanics with an emphasis on the physical and moral weight of killing. The game departs from its predecessors by incorporating a stronger narrative focus on consequence alongside its action. A notable addition is an online multiplayer component supporting up to eight players, expanding the series beyond its traditionally single-player format. The shift in creative direction brought meaningful changes to both tone and mechanics compared to earlier entries in the franchise.
Ryu is called upon by the Japanese Self-Defense Force to deal with a terrorist group led by the mysterious alchemist, the Regent of the Mask, who personally wanted the Dragon Ninja to come. Upon encountering the alchemist at the Prime Minister's residence in London, he curses Ryu's right arm with the Grip of Murder which thrives on all the lives Ryu has taken, causing the Dragon Sword to be absorbed into Ryu's arm. Later, Ryu and JSDF member Mizuki McCloud watch as the Regent demands the immediate surrender by the nations of the world in seven days, or face annihilation.
