PlanetSide is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter developed by Sony Online Entertainment and released for PC in 2003. Set on the planet Auraxis, the game centers on a persistent three-way war in which players join one of three rival factions competing for territorial dominance across ten distinct continents. Rather than instanced, small-scale matches typical of conventional shooters, PlanetSide stages battles involving hundreds of players simultaneously, with outcomes carrying lasting strategic consequences for all factions. Players fill specialized roles within their chosen faction, including infantry, combat vehicle operator, stealth infiltrator, combat medic, or combat engineer, progressing through RPG-style character development. Combat is conducted primarily from a first-person perspective, with a third-person option available. PlanetSide was among the earliest and most notable entries in the MMOFPS genre. A sequel, PlanetSide 2, followed in November 2012. The original game's servers were permanently shut down on July 1, 2016.
