Developed by LEVEL-5 and released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS, with later ports to Android and iOS, Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a point-and-click puzzle and visual novel hybrid. The story follows the gentlemanly Professor Layton as he investigates St. Mystere, an eccentric village where nearly every resident communicates through riddles and conceals their secrets behind brainteasers. The immediate purpose of his visit is to locate a hidden treasure named in the will of a recently deceased wealthy baron. Gameplay centers on exploring the village, conversing with its peculiar inhabitants, and solving a large collection of logic puzzles, sliding challenges, and other brain teasers embedded throughout the environment. Progress through the narrative depends on resolving these puzzles, blending mystery storytelling with a structured series of increasingly demanding mental challenges.

When the wealthy Baron Augustus Reinhold passes away, his will reveals a hidden treasure in the village of St. Mystere. Unable to locate the treasure themselves, the baron's family calls upon renowned puzzle expert Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke, for help. Upon the pair's arrival, their search for the treasure is interrupted by the suspicious death of another member of the Reinhold family. Now with two mysteries on their hands, Professor Layton and Luke must work their way through the village's many puzzles, riddles and brainteasers to find the truth.
