Professor Layton and the Last Specter is a point-and-click puzzle and visual novel game developed by LEVEL-5 for the Nintendo DS, released in 2009 as the fourth entry in the Professor Layton series. Set three years before the events of the original trilogy, it functions as a prequel chronicling the circumstances through which Professor Layton first encountered his apprentice, Luke Triton. The main adventure features more than 170 puzzles woven into its narrative. The North American release also includes a bundled bonus title, Professor Layton's London Life, a separate role-playing game in which players interact with characters from across the series within a miniature setting called Little London, advertised as offering over 100 hours of content. London Life was omitted from European versions of the game to avoid delaying its regional release for translation purposes.
