Project X Zone is a tactical role-playing game developed by Monolith Soft and released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS. A spiritual successor to Namco × Capcom, it brings together characters from Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Sega across grid-based stages drawn from the various franchises represented in the crossover. Combat is built around Pair Units, in which two characters team up as a single controllable force. A third character, designated a Solo Unit, can be called in once per battle to provide supplementary assistance. Movement on the field map operates with greater freedom than in its predecessor — units can traverse their allotted range, interact with treasure chests, and destroy objects without any penalty before committing to an attack. The result is a strategy RPG that emphasizes both tactical positioning and fan-service appeal through its broad roster of iconic characters from three major publishers.

This story begins with the theft of a treasure known as the "Portalstone" that this family has been protecting over the ages. Mii Kouryuji has enlisted the help of private detective Kogoro Tenzai in order to locate the stone. Who stole the stone? And for what purpose? The thoughts and ambitions of various people, organizations, and mythical beings mingle and eventually the case becomes a chaos of a grand scale. The worlds of the past, future, and even dimensions become involved. Thus, our heroes' long journey is about to begin.
