Developed by Capcom Planning Room 2 and released in 1998, Resident Evil 2 is a survival horror action-adventure available on PlayStation, GameCube, Dreamcast, PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Portable. A direct follow-up to the original Resident Evil, it retains the series' signature approach of placing three-dimensional polygon characters against pre-rendered two-dimensional backgrounds, with gameplay observed through fixed cinematic camera angles that shift from room to room. Players select one of two protagonists at the outset, each following the same broad scenario through a zombie-infested setting while encountering distinct supporting characters and different weapon loadouts along the way. This structural choice gives the two playthroughs meaningfully different experiences despite sharing a common starting point. The game blends combat, item management, and environmental puzzle-solving in the manner established by its predecessor, forming a core part of Capcom's early survival horror catalog.
The game is set on September 29, 1998. Zombies have infested Raccoon City. A biological weapon known as the T-Virus was released into the sewer system. Rats then spread the virus to the city's population. Two people make their way to Raccoon City: Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie police officer on his first day on the job, and Claire Redfield, a college student looking for her brother. Leon and Claire quickly find themselves fighting for their lives against hordes of creatures in their search for survival.
