Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII is a turn-based strategy RPG developed by Koei and released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PC, and Mac. Set during the turbulent collapse of the Han dynasty in second-century China, the game tasks players with reuniting a fractured nation across a historical window spanning from the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 A.D. to the death of Zhuge Liang in 234 A.D. Players select from a roster of over 700 characters, including 100 customizable originals, and can control up to eight different characters within a single playthrough. The game offers 54 historical scenarios plus one fictional story featuring the full officer roster. Relationship mechanics such as marriage and sworn brotherhood allow players to shape political alliances, while army construction draws from rulers, warlords, viceroys, free officers, and roving bands. Battles can involve more than four simultaneous opposing forces.
