Samurai Shodown is a 1993 weapons-based fighting game developed by SNK, originally released for arcades and the Neo Geo AES before appearing on numerous platforms including the Super Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, PlayStation, and Sega CD, among others. Set in feudal Japan, the game centers on the rise of Shiro Tokisada Amakusa, a heretical preacher whose body has been seized by a malevolent entity known as Ambrosia, which seeks to cast the world into darkness. Players select from a roster of 12 main fighters — plus three additional bonus characters — and compete in one-on-one combat to defeat Amakusa and complete their individual missions. The game is notably distinguished by its emphasis on bladed and edged weapons rather than the unarmed combat typical of its contemporaries, giving its fighting system a distinct pace and tactical character.
