Shadows of the Damned is a third-person shooter and puzzle game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, released in 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The project represents a collaboration between director Suda 51, known for No More Heroes, and Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil. Players control Garcia, a demon hunter navigating a grotesque underworld in pursuit of his kidnapped girlfriend, who has been taken by a mysterious antagonist. The game's central mechanic revolves around a light-versus-darkness system, in which players wield light as a weapon and tool to overcome enemies and environmental obstacles shrouded in darkness. Environments range from demon-ravaged towns and shadow-filled forests to sewers, and the game features elaborate boss encounters throughout. The tone blends Suda 51's punk sensibility with Mikami's background in survival horror, resulting in a stylistically distinctive and graphically grotesque action experience.
His name is Garcia Hotspur, hunter of demons, and his wrath will bring hell to its knees. When evil demonic creatures kidnap Garcia’s girlfriend, it’s up to him to travel to the City of the Damned to get her back. Aided by a former demon with the ability to transform into an array of vicious weapons, Garcia will once again take on the mantel of “demon hunter” and rip apart the horrifying forces of the underworld to protect what he loves most.
