Released in 2009 for the Wii, SimAnimals is a life simulation game developed by Electronic Arts and the launch title of a nature-focused offshoot of the Sims franchise. Rather than managing human characters, players tend to over 30 species of forest animals across varied environments including swamps, rivers, orchards, junkyards, and forests. Core gameplay revolves around fulfilling the needs of these animals to raise their happiness to target levels, which in turn unlocks new areas of the world. Structured quests guide players toward either improving habitat conditions or satisfying the specific requirements of individual animals. Wii motion controls are central to interaction throughout. The game supports up to four simultaneous players via separate Wii remotes, with multiplayer sessions capable of producing either cooperative outcomes or chaotic, conflicting results depending on how participants choose to play.
