Sonic and the Black Knight is a 2009 Wii action platformer developed by Sonic Team that transplants its protagonist into an Arthurian fantasy setting. When a wizard named Merlina — granddaughter of the legendary Merlin — summons Sonic to a mystical medieval realm, he discovers that King Arthur has been corrupted by an evil force emanating from Excalibur's scabbard, transforming him into the tyrannical Black Knight. Raw speed proves insufficient against this threat, so Sonic takes up Caliburn, a talking sword, to combat the curse directly. Gameplay blends high-speed platforming with hack-and-slash combat as Sonic wields Caliburn through levels while pursuing the Knights of the Round Table and ultimately seeking Excalibur itself. Collecting these legendary blades is central to breaking Arthur's corruption and restoring him to a benevolent ruler.
