SoulCalibur II is a weapon-based 3D fighting game developed by Project Soul, released in arcades in 2002 as the third entry in the Soul series. It builds on its predecessors with improved graphics, new fighters, and new stages. The arcade version features a distinctive Conquest Mode in which players align with one of four armies and compete through a series of eight single-round battles per session. Progress is saved via a name and password system, and the game tracks performance across four rating categories — Soul, Power, Wisdom, and Skill — as well as which moves a player employs most frequently. Wins and losses contribute to experience and rank promotion, while results after each session update territorial control across the mode's broader competitive landscape. Players also have the option to face an AI-controlled mirror match as a bonus round. Console ports of the game introduced guest characters from outside the franchise.
Four years have passed since the spirit sword SoulCalibur defeated the evil Soul Edge. At the end of that fateful battle, the shards of the shattered Soul Edge were scattered across the world and SoulCalibur was lost to the void. Now, the evil that still resides in the scattered shards of Soul Edge threatens again to engulf the world in darkness.
