Developed by Jupiter Corporation and released in 2008 for Nintendo DS, Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals is a sci-fi action role-playing game and the sequel to the original Spectrobes. The game follows Rallen and Jeena, interplanetary patrol officers, as they continue their work discovering, excavating, awakening, and training fossilized creatures called spectrobes, which are then deployed in combat against enemies. This installment centers on the mystery surrounding a series of ominous portals leading to distant dimensions, as well as a new antagonist intent on destroying the spectrobes. Drawing on an anime-inspired visual style, the game builds on the creature-collection and battling mechanics established by its predecessor, weaving them into an expanded narrative that takes the two protagonists beyond familiar territory into unknown dimensional realms.
