Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach once again, but this time, he plans to force her into a royal wedding! Mario sets off on a globe-trotting adventure beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, teaming up with Cappy, a mysterious hat-shaped spirit from the Cap Kingdom whose sister Tiara was also taken by Bowser. Together, they travel across vast and colorful kingdoms aboard the airship Odyssey, collecting Power Moons to fuel their journey. Using Cappy’s powers, Mario can “capture” enemies, objects, and creatures to gain their abilities, from a Goomba stack to a mighty T-Rex. From the bustling streets of New Donk City to the frozen peaks of the Snow Kingdom, Mario and Cappy must chase Bowser across the world to stop his forced wedding and rescue Peach and Tiara before it’s too late.
The main story of Super Mario Odyssey takes approximately 10–15 hours to complete. However, collecting all 880 Power Moons and fully completing the game can take over 50 hours.
Super Mario Odyssey supports local two-player co-op where the second player controls Cappy independently using a separate Joy-Con. There is no online multiplayer mode.
Cappy is a sentient hat from the Cap Kingdom who partners with Mario throughout the game. By throwing Cappy at certain enemies and objects, Mario can 'capture' them and take control of their abilities, which is the game's core mechanic.
There are 880 unique Power Moons to collect across all kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey. Many additional moons become available after completing the main story, and some can be purchased from in-game shops.
Super Mario Odyssey is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, released in October 2017. It is not available on other platforms. It is also playable on Nintendo Switch 2 via backward compatibility.
Super Mario Odyssey features large, open sandbox-style kingdoms that players can explore freely. While not a single open world, each kingdom offers non-linear exploration with multiple objectives scattered throughout.
