Released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a platformer developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development that serves as a prequel to Super Mario World. Set before the events of that 1990 title, the game follows Yoshi as he carries Baby Mario across 48 levels, working to reunite him with his brother Luigi after Luigi is seized by Baby Bowser's forces. Yoshi navigates each stage by running, jumping, solving puzzles, and gathering items. The game marks the character's debut as a series lead and introduces several of his defining mechanics: a flutter jump for extended aerial movement, the ability to swallow enemies and convert them into throwable eggs, and transformations into various vehicles. Visually, it departs from the series norm with a distinctive hand-drawn art style.
A stork carrying the infant Mario Brothers is attacked by Kamek the Magikoopa, who steals Baby Luigi and knocks Baby Mario out of the sky. Baby Mario lands on Yoshi's Island on the back of Yoshi himself. With the help of his seven other Yoshi friends, Yoshi must traverse the island to safely reunite Baby Mario with his brother and get the babies to their parents.
