The King of Fighters Neowave is a 2D fighting game developed by SNK Playmore, released in 2004 for arcades and later ported to PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox. Drawing on over a decade of SNK history, the roster assembles 43 characters — including seven bonus fighters — organized into 12 three-person teams such as the Women Fighters Team and the Fatal Fury Team. Combat follows the classic 3-on-3 team battle format and incorporates three distinct gameplay modes: Super Cancel, which chains special moves into super attacks for increased damage; Guard Break; and Max2. A new Heat Mode allows fighters to temporarily boost their offensive power at the cost of gradually draining health. The game also revives the evasion roll and thrust attack mechanics from earlier entries in the series, and features elaborately detailed background stages alongside high-damage Super Special Moves.
