A real-time strategy game developed by EA Los Angeles and released in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II shifts the conflict northward, away from the events depicted in the film trilogy. Players can command Elven or Dwarven armies on the side of Good, or lead Evil forces featuring heroes and creatures absent from the Peter Jackson films. The campaign spans locations not previously seen in the series, including Dol Guldur, the Misty Mountains, and Mirkwood. Both factions have access to powerful new abilities and weapons, among them the capacity to summon dragons. The game expands considerably on its predecessor's scope, offering a broader roster of civilizations and a setting that draws more directly from Tolkien's wider legendarium rather than the theatrical adaptations.
