The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is a turn-based RPG developed by EA Redwood Shores and released in 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and Game Boy Advance. Rather than following the Fellowship directly, the game centers on seven original characters created exclusively for it, who travel through key locations across Middle-earth — including Moria and the Pelennor Fields — as events from all three films unfold around them. Established figures such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Éowyn, Faramir, and Gothmog appear in supporting roles. The structure closely resembles the Final Fantasy series: a party-based system in which each character carries a distinct set of skills and attributes, all of which develop as characters gain levels. Combat is turn-based, giving players meaningful tactical choices each round. Movie footage and narration recorded by Ian McKellen connect the original storyline to the broader saga.
As you fight to destroy the one ring, you will interact with the different characters on your team, take individual assignments, and travel through familiar and little-seen lands -- utilizing the unique turn-based fight system all the while.
