Released in 1995 by Gremlin Interactive, VR Soccer (known as Actua Soccer in Europe and Japan) is a sports simulation title available on DOS, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Linux, Mac, and Windows. It holds a notable place in gaming history as the first sports video game to feature a fully three-dimensional graphics engine. Player animations were produced using motion capture, with three Sheffield Wednesday footballers serving as the movement models. The game includes 44 national teams, each with 22 players, and supports both head-to-head and alternating two-player modes. A real-time 3D camera system allows matches to be viewed from multiple angles across the pitch. Players can also create and customize their own team. A follow-up release, Actua Soccer: Club Edition, arrived in 1996 featuring 20 Premier League clubs from the 1996–97 season and became a bestseller across Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom.
