A first-person shooter developed by Raven Software and released in 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Wolfenstein serves as a direct sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny. Players control B.J. Blazkowicz, depicted here in civilian clothes with dark hair and an unshaven appearance, as he fights through waves of Nazi enemies ranging from standard soldiers to ninja-type combatants. Combat draws on a conventional selection of World War II-era firearms, including the MP40 submachine gun and K98 rifle. The game's central mechanic involves a medallion that grants access to a supernatural dimension called the Veil, unlocking four distinct powers over the course of the campaign — including enhanced enemy perception, the ability to slow time, a protective shield, and increased physical strength. Each power consumes the medallion's energy, which can only be replenished at hidden nodes found within the Veil.
The story is set in the fictional town of Isenstadt during World War II, which the Nazis have enforced martial law in order to excavate rare Nachtsonne crystals necessary to access the "Black Sun" dimension. B.J Blazkowicz is sent to Isenstadt to find and retrieve the Thule Medallion, and 4 crystals to prevent the Nazis from using it.
