Developed by Game Freak and released in 1991, Yoshi is a puzzle game for the Nintendo Entertainment System — later made available on Family Computer, Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS — inspired by the mechanics of Tetris. The game centers on stacking falling Mario enemies, with the core objective of matching two identical enemies on top of each other to eliminate them from the play field. Strategy comes from managing the steady accumulation of different enemy types, as the player must anticipate placement to create valid pairs before the screen fills. The titular Yoshi appears as part of the gameplay, with Yoshi egg shells serving as a key mechanic for clearing pieces. Simple in concept but demanding in execution, the game translates the familiar falling-block format into a character-driven puzzle experience rooted in the Mario universe.
