Age of Empires Online is a free-to-play multiplayer real-time strategy game developed by Gas Powered Games and Robot Entertainment, published by Microsoft and released for Windows in August 2011. Building on the foundations of the Age of Empires series, it blends traditional RTS gameplay with RPG progression elements, allowing players to develop civilizations, complete quests, and acquire special items and blueprints. Premium content could be unlocked through in-game currency or direct purchase. The game launched on Steam in March 2012 alongside a significant update and the addition of the Celtic civilization. Microsoft ended development in January 2013 and shut down official servers in July 2014. A community revival effort called Project Celeste emerged in 2017, using a publicly released developer kit to host a server emulator that restores full single-player and multiplayer functionality, including a previously unreleased Roman civilization completed and launched in March 2021.
