Akai Katana is a horizontally scrolling bullet hell shooter developed by CAVE Interactive, initially released for arcades in Japan in 2010. Set against a stylized feudal Japanese backdrop, the game follows the conventions of CAVE's demanding shooter design, presenting players with dense patterns of enemy fire to navigate while managing offensive play. The Xbox 360 port, released in Japan in 2011 under the title Akai Katana Shin, expanded on the arcade original by introducing additional game modes not present in the initial release. Rising Star Games brought the console version to North America and Europe in 2012. The game is notable within the bullet hell genre for its distinctive aesthetic blending samurai imagery with the intense, pattern-heavy gameplay that characterizes CAVE's catalog, making it a recognizable entry in the studio's body of work.
Set in a parallel world resembling Japan's Taisho period, the people have discovered the powerful Blood Swords. Requiring human sacrifices to unleash their immense destructive power, these swords have been used by the empire to crush neighboring countries. However, all the bloodshed and power gained through sacrificing close family members has made some of the swordsmen reconsider. With new fighter planes and the powered up swords at their disposal, this small band of rebels now fight back against the tyrannical empire.
