The Crimson Court is the first expansion for Red Hook Studios' gothic dungeon-crawling RPG Darkest Dungeon, released in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Mac, and Linux. Rather than functioning as a separate standalone episode, the expansion runs as a parallel campaign alongside the base game's existing content, introducing new challenges and varied encounters at all difficulty levels. Its narrative component explores the backstory of the Ancestor character from the main game's earlier days, delivered through cutscenes consistent in style with those found throughout the original. The expansion can be integrated into an active campaign already in progress or started fresh alongside a new one, with its events and features unlocking organically through normal play rather than being immediately available from the outset.
