Pokémon Shield is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. The game introduces the Galar region, a new setting that expands the long-running Pokémon series. As with other mainline entries in the franchise, players explore the region, capture and train Pokémon, and engage in turn-based battles. The title is one of a pair of version-exclusive releases alongside Pokémon Sword, a common release structure for the series. Players progress through the region's towns, routes, and gyms, building a team of Pokémon and competing against other trainers. The game blends traditional role-playing progression with strategic turn-based combat, following the established formula of the Pokémon series while introducing Galar-specific Pokémon, characters, and locations.
