Pokémon Violet is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak, released in 2022 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Set in the Paldea region, an open world encompassing lakes, mountain ranges, wastelands, villages, and cities, the game tasks players with catching, battling, and raising Pokémon across a largely unrestricted environment. Progression is non-linear, allowing exploration at a self-determined pace across land, water, and air. Travel is facilitated by a shape-shifting Legendary Pokémon that serves as a mount. Players begin their journey by selecting one of three starter Pokémon — the Grass-type Sprigatito, the Fire-type Fuecoco, or the Water-type Quaxly — before setting out through the region. Combat follows the series' established turn-based format. The game represents a continued shift toward open-world design within the mainline Pokémon series.
