Disciples II: Guardians of the Light is a stand-alone turn-based strategy expansion developed by Strategy First and released for PC in 2003. Set within the fantasy world of the Disciples II series, it restricts playable factions to two: the Empire and the Mountain Clans. The Empire storyline centers on political collapse, as competing claimants fight over an empty throne while a ruthless Inquisition spreads unrest through human territories. The Mountain Clans, meanwhile, are rebuilding after near-annihilation, working to reunite scattered tribes and pursue a divinely ordained quest to rediscover an ancient ritual that would restore communication with their deity, Wotan. As a stand-alone release, the expansion does not require ownership of the base game, making it an accessible entry point into the series while offering existing players two distinct narrative campaigns set against the broader conflicts of the Disciples universe.
A new threat is sweeping over the human lands while self-proclaimed leaders try to take control of the Empire. Meanwhile the Mountain Clans are trying to uncover an ancient ritual that will let them communicate with their god, Wotan.
