F-Zero is a futuristic racing game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, later appearing on additional platforms including Wii, Wii U, and New Nintendo 3DS. Set in the year 2560, it imagines a world transformed by contact with alien civilizations, where interplanetary commerce has produced extraordinary wealth and, in turn, demand for spectacular new forms of entertainment. The answer was a hovering vehicle racing circuit inspired by Formula One, with machines floating a foot above specially designed tracks — a competition that came to be known as F-Zero. Players choose from four distinct pilots: Captain Falcon, Dr. Stewart, Pico, and Samurai Goroh, then compete across Grand Prix circuits at high speed. The game is credited with demonstrating the Mode 7 graphical capabilities of the SNES hardware through its scaling and rotation track effects.
