Gauntlet is a fantasy hack-and-slash arcade game developed by Atari Games and released in 1985, supporting up to four simultaneous players. Each player chooses one of four characters — Thor the Warrior, Merlin the Wizard, Thyra the Valkyrie, or Questor the Elf — each with distinct strengths and weaknesses across combat ability, magical power, armor, and movement speed. Gameplay unfolds across top-down maze levels where the primary objective is locating and reaching the exit on each stage. Scattered throughout are items that restore health, open doors, award points, or unleash screen-clearing magic. Enemies including ghosts, grunts, demons, sorcerers, and thieves pour from destructible generators, while the especially dangerous "Death" enemy drains health on contact and resists elimination. Health depletes both through enemy contact and passively over time, functioning as a constant pressure mechanic. Fallen characters can be revived by inserting a coin, and cooperation between players — sharing food and coordinating monster control — becomes increasingly important as levels grow more demanding. The game was later ported to numerous home platforms including DOS, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Sega Master System.
