Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s is a music rhythm game developed by Harmonix Music Systems and released in 2007 for PlayStation 2. The third entry in the Guitar Hero series, it functions as a standalone expansion rather than a full sequel, carrying over the core gameplay mechanics from Guitar Hero II without modification. Players use a separately purchased guitar-shaped controller to match notes as they scroll across the screen, simulating rock guitar performance. The game's central theme is the 1980s, reflected throughout its soundtrack of decade-specific tracks as well as its playable characters, costumes, and visual artwork. Reception was cooler than for its predecessors, with critics pointing to the absence of new gameplay features and a smaller song selection. It marks the final Guitar Hero title from Harmonix before the studio shifted focus to develop Rock Band.
