Guitar Hero is a music rhythm game developed by Harmonix Music Systems and published by RedOctane for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The game ships with a miniature Gibson SG-shaped guitar controller, which players use to simulate rock guitar performance by pressing fret buttons in sync with notes scrolling across the screen — a mechanic drawing inspiration from the arcade game GuitarFreaks. The setlist comprises 30 licensed covers of rock songs drawn from five decades of the genre, ranging from the 1960s through 2005, supplemented by additional bonus tracks. The first entry in what would become a major franchise, Guitar Hero received widespread critical acclaim upon its North American launch and is regarded as one of the most influential games of the early 21st century. Its commercial success spawned numerous sequels, expansions, and related products, with the series ultimately generating over two billion dollars in sales.
