Based on J.K. Rowling's third novel, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a 2004 platform and adventure game developed by KnowWonder for PC. A follow-up to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it expands on that game's formula by allowing players to switch between three characters — Harry, Ron, and Hermione — each capable of casting spells, battling enemies, and working through environmental puzzles. Between story missions, Hogwarts castle serves as an open hub world available for free exploration. Hidden throughout its corridors and secret areas are collectible items including Every Flavour Beans, Pumpkin Pasties, and Cauldron Cakes, which act as in-game currency. These can be exchanged for Collector Cards, portrait passwords that unlock additional hidden locations, and various power-ups, adding an incentive to thorough exploration beyond the main objectives.
The games follows Harry Potter along with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger as they return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Prisoner Sirius Black has escaped the wizard prison Azkaban, and is supposedly ready to attack Harry in Hogwarts. The game begins on the Hogwarts Express, ignoring the events at Harry's home. Upon reaching Hogwarts, the trio follow the events of the novel, and learn magic by attending classes.
