Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG developed by Square Product Development Division 1 and released for the PlayStation 2 in 2002. The game emerged from a collaboration between Squaresoft and The Walt Disney Company, blending characters and worlds from Disney animated films with figures from Square's Final Fantasy series. It marked director Tetsuya Nomura's first time leading a project, and features a voice cast drawn largely from the official Disney character actors. Combat incorporates substantial action-adventure mechanics, distinguishing it from Square's more traditional RPG releases. Progression follows an experience-based system in which defeating enemies yields experience points scaled to each enemy's strength. Accumulating enough experience raises the player character's level, improving core statistics such as strength, defense, magic, hit points, and ability points, with a new predetermined ability unlocked roughly every four levels.
When his world is destroyed and his friends mysteriously disappear, a young boy named Sora is thrust into a quest to find his missing friends and prevent the armies of darkness from destroying many other worlds. During his quest, he meets many characters from classic Disney films and a handful from the Final Fantasy video game series.
