Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is a 2004 role-playing game developed by Jupiter Corporation and published by Square Enix for the Game Boy Advance. The second entry in the Kingdom Hearts series and a direct sequel to the original Kingdom Hearts, it fits into the franchise's broader chronology after Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts, with its events running parallel to those of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. The game adapts the series' action-oriented origins into a turn-based, card-driven combat system suited to the handheld format. Players progress through environments drawn from familiar Disney worlds, managing decks of cards that govern attacks, magic, and other abilities in battle. As a portable entry bridging two major console releases, Chain of Memories serves a narrative connective role within the larger Kingdom Hearts storyline while offering a distinct mechanical approach compared to its predecessors.
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories takes place directly after the ending of the first game, Kingdom Hearts. The game is set in Castle Oblivion, a mysterious castle kept by Lord Marluxia. Sora and his teammates are told that the castle causes visitors to lose their memories upon entering. The lobby and areas between floors are white with flower-themed decorations, but each floor can be transformed into a different world from the first Kingdom Hearts game using "world cards" created from Sora's memories. Like before, many of the worlds are based on Disney films while the rest were created by Square Enix.
