Mario Party is a digital board game developed by Hudson Soft for the Nintendo 64, released in 1998. Up to four players move across themed game boards by rolling dice, following branching paths in pursuit of stars and coins. Stars are purchased at a star space that shifts to a new location on the board each time one is bought, creating a constantly moving objective. Coins, the currency used to acquire stars, are primarily earned through minigames played at the end of each turn. The game includes at least 50 minigames spanning several formats: free-for-all competitions where all four players face off individually, team-based 2-on-2 and 1-on-3 contests that require temporary cooperation, and cooperative four-player challenges. Most minigame winners receive ten coins. Despite any team arrangements within minigames, each player ultimately competes independently in the larger board game.
