Metal Gear Online, also known as MGO2, is a 2008 tactical online multiplayer shooter developed by Kojima Productions for PlayStation 3, with a standalone arcade release in Japan. A spinoff of the Metal Gear series, it was built on the gameplay systems and setting of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and was ultimately included as a component of that title after initially being announced as a separate standalone product. The game was first revealed at Kojima Productions' celebration of the Metal Gear series' 20th anniversary. While earlier entries in the franchise, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, each incorporated online modes under the same name, this iteration represented a more fully realized dedicated online experience. The official servers were shut down in June 2012, though fan-run servers have since kept the game accessible.
