Phantom Brave is a tactical role-playing game developed by System Prisma, released in 2004 for PlayStation 2 and later ported to Wii, PlayStation Portable, and PC. Set in the world of Ivoire — an archipelago of islands that has come under threat from an ancient and formidable force — the game follows Marona, a 13-year-old orphan with the rare ability to communicate with phantoms. This gift draws hostility from those around her, but also forms the basis of her combat capabilities. Her guardian, a phantom named Ash, accompanies her from the outset, and additional phantoms join the party as the story progresses. Combat is turn-based and centers on a confinement mechanic: Marona binds phantoms to objects present on the battlefield, such as rocks or trees, temporarily making them controllable units. The object chosen influences the phantom's attributes — a rock might increase strength while reducing movement speed, for instance. Phantoms remain in play for only a limited number of turns. Defeating enemies awards experience points, enabling characters to grow stronger over time.
