Pokémon Black Version is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and released in 2010 for the Nintendo DS, forming one half of the primary paired Generation V titles alongside Pokémon White Version. Players choose between a male or female protagonist and travel through Unova, a new region populated exclusively with Generation V Pokémon. In a notable departure from previous entries in the series, no Pokémon from earlier generations are available to catch until after the main story is completed by defeating the antagonist organization Team Plasma. Gameplay follows the turn-based structure established by earlier installments, with trainers building a party of Pokémon to battle and capture creatures throughout the region. The games were succeeded in 2012 by direct sequels, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, set two years after the events of the original titles.
