Project Gotham Racing is a 2001 racing game developed by Bizarre Creations and published by Microsoft as a launch title for the Xbox. A spiritual successor to Metropolis Street Racer on the Sega Dreamcast — itself a Bizarre Creations title that became a software-only pursuit after Sega exited the hardware market — the game established a new franchise built around competitive street racing in real-world city environments. Players race high-performance vehicles through recreated urban locations, balancing speed with style to earn recognition on the track. The title proved a commercial success, becoming the second best-selling Xbox game behind Halo: Combat Evolved at the time of its release. It later received backward compatibility support for the Xbox 360 through a downloadable update made available on July 12, 2010. Project Gotham Racing laid the foundation for a series that would continue across multiple subsequent entries.
