R-Types is a 1998 compilation shooter from Irem, released on PlayStation and later available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, bundling arcade-accurate ports of R-Type and R-Type II. Both titles are reproduced directly from their original coin-op versions without graphical compromise. The package introduces several accessibility concessions absent from the arcade releases: progress is automatically saved at the beginning of each stage, eliminating the need to restart entirely after a loss, and continues are unlimited. Beyond the core games, the compilation includes a library section covering narrative background from the R-Type universe alongside browsable in-game artwork. Additional bonus content consists of an FMV introduction sequence and ending cinematics. The release functions primarily as a preservation effort, offering players a faithful home version of both side-scrolling shooters with modest quality-of-life adjustments to address their historically demanding difficulty.
