Released in 2015 for the Wii U, Splatoon is a team-based third-person shooter and platformer developed by Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.2. The game supports matches of up to eight players divided into two four-person teams, and also includes a single-player campaign. Players take control of Inklings, beings capable of shifting between a humanoid form and a squid form. In humanoid form, Inklings fire ink across the environment; switching to squid form lets them swim through ink of their own color, traversing walls and grates, concealing themselves from opponents, and restoring their ink supply. This shapeshifting mechanic sits at the core of both movement and strategy, as controlling territory with ink is central to competitive play.
After the Great Zapfish, Inkopolis' primary power supply, is stolen, Cap'n Cuttlefish employs a Splatoon of Inklings to travel to the Octarians' secret underground base and retrieve it. Players assume the role of Agent 3 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon and traverse the treacherous landscape of Octo Valley in order to reclaim various lost Zapfish, Sunken Scrolls, and Power Eggs.
