A 2004 Game Boy Advance platformer developed by Vicarious Visions, Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy marks the studio's first entry in the Spyro series and serves as a crossover with the Crash Bandicoot franchise. Rather than the isometric gameplay the series was known for, the overworld adopts a side-scrolling structure. The bulk of the experience, however, is built around a large collection of discrete mini-challenges that vary considerably in style: a vertical shooter in which Spyro blasts sheep and collects gems, rapid button-tapping contests for activities like tug-of-war and ice cube creation, tank-driving sequences, and a Breakout-style combat challenge. This variety of short-form gameplay scenarios forms the core of the title rather than traditional platforming. The game also supports link cable connectivity, allowing players to compete against each other in multiplayer challenges.
Ripto and Dr. Cortex have combined their forces to take over the world once and for all. Right in the middle of it all our the heroes, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. Spyro now finds himself in both familiar and unfamiliar territory, passing through the realms into Crash's world as well as his own to defeat the evil that awaits. Spyro's usual abilities are available as always.
