Developed by WOW Entertainment and released in 2005, The House of the Dead 4 is a horror-themed light gun shooter and the fourth entry in Sega's long-running House of the Dead series. Set between the events of The House of the Dead 2 and The House of the Dead III, the game features returning character James Taylor alongside Kate Green, a newcomer to the series. Players battle through waves of undead enemies across the game's stages, with several new gameplay mechanics introduced alongside the core arcade shooting formula. It was the first title to run on the Sega Lindbergh arcade system board. A PlayStation 3 version, released in April 2012 via PlayStation Network, added support for the PlayStation Move motion controller and incorporated the two additional stages originally found in The House of the Dead 4 Special.
In 2003, veteran AMS agent James Taylor and rookie Kate Green gather intelligence at the fifth basement floor of the AMS' European headquarters. James suspects that the events of the 2000 Goldman case have not ended. A sudden earthquake rocks the room, collapsing the basement walls and trapping the agents. Several days later, while awaiting backup, James' PDA goes off; hordes of creatures appear on the security cameras. James and Kate arm themselves and escape. In a classified information room, they uncover a plot to fire nuclear missiles worldwide within 24 hours' time.
