The Precursors is an open-world action RPG and space simulator developed by Deep Shadows and released for Windows in 2009. Set across a sprawling galaxy, the game blends first-person shooter combat, role-playing progression, and space flight into a single connected experience. Players travel between multiple planets, each freely explorable and featuring real-time weather, day-night cycles, and atmospheric changes. The setting encompasses inhabited worlds, ruined wastelands, and smuggler outposts, populated by hundreds of NPCs drawn from various alien races including insects, plant creatures, and birdmen. Over 250 quests drive the narrative, which involves corrupt officials, political intrigue, and the mystery of an ancient precursor civilization. Combat incorporates partly organic weapons whose ammunition must be bred rather than purchased. Beyond ground-level exploration, players can pilot spaceships, engage in space battles, and board enemy vessels, while trading systems add an economic layer to the broader galactic sandbox.
