Released in 2005 by Beenox for Xbox, PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, and PC, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse is an action role-playing hack-and-slash game and the follow-up to X-Men Legends. Players manage a party of four mutant characters, directly controlling one at a time while the others are handled by the AI. Switching between characters is both a tactical and puzzle-solving necessity, as specific mutant abilities are required for certain obstacles — Iceman can extinguish fires, for instance, while Magneto can construct metal bridges across gaps. Combat and loot collection make up the bulk of gameplay, with defeated enemies dropping randomized items, a change from the first game's fixed drops. Characters earn experience points to level up, grow stronger, and unlock new skills, with players given the option to manually distribute experience and skill points themselves.
