Released in 2002 by EA Canada for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and PC, 2002 FIFA World Cup is the official licensed game of the 17th FIFA World Cup, staged in South Korea and Japan from May 31 to June 30 of that year. Built on the FIFA Soccer 2002 engine, the game covers all nations that qualified for the tournament alongside additional countries, and presents brief statistical profiles for each team, including their record World Cup wins and total appearances in the competition. Player and stadium visuals are rendered in considerable detail, with high-resolution character textures intended to make individual players recognizable. Animations were captured from real athletes using motion sensors, with new movements added for sliding and falling. A notable mechanical addition is the aerial ball control system, which gives players greater command over airborne balls and opens up opportunities for finishing from crosses and high passes.
