Released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, Castlevania by Konami brings the long-running series into three dimensions as a platforming, hack-and-slash adventure. Players choose between two protagonists: Reinhardt Schneider, a whip-wielding vampire hunter who has trained his entire life for this confrontation, or Carrie Fernandez, a young girl with potent magical abilities who feels a mysterious pull toward Dracula's domain. Both characters must infiltrate Castlevania and stop the dark schemes of its monstrous inhabitants. The two characters offer distinct playstyles — Reinhardt relying on close-quarters combat with his whip, Carrie drawing on ranged magical attacks — giving the game meaningful replay value. The shift to 3D gameplay marked a significant departure for the franchise, blending exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat across the gothic environments of Dracula's castle.
Castlevania games debut on the N64 this is the first Castlevania game in 3D. However, the goal of the game remains the same: defeat Dracula and his monsters. The player can choose to be Reinhardt Schneider with traditional whip or Carrie Fernandez who uses magic. A new feature is the presence of an in-game clock that switches time from day to night.
