Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a sports party game developed by Sega Games for the Nintendo Switch, released in 2019. The sixth entry in the Mario & Sonic crossover series, it draws from the real-world 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. The game features a broad roster of athletic events, including returning disciplines such as boxing, soccer, swimming, and gymnastics, alongside newly introduced Olympic sports like karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. A distinct secondary mode transports players to the 1964 Summer Olympics through 2D Events — recreations of classic competitions rendered in retro 8-bit Mario and 16-bit Sonic visual styles. These throwback events are restricted to eight playable characters and use button-only controls, evoking the design conventions of early sports games. Both modes support multiplayer competition.
