NBA Hangtime is a 1996 arcade-style basketball game developed by Midway, released across Arcade, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and PC. It was the third basketball title from the original development team behind the NBA Jam series, though the name changed after Acclaim Entertainment acquired the NBA Jam trademark for home releases. Gameplay follows the fast-paced, exaggerated style associated with that lineage, and introduces several new features including character creation, alley oops, and double dunks. Acclaim released its own competing title, NBA Jam Extreme, in the same year. Later in the arcade release cycle, Midway issued a software update called NBA Maximum Hangtime, expanding on the base game. The character creation system was a notable addition for the genre at the time, allowing players to build and use custom athletes alongside the existing roster.
